Safety at Sea during the Industrial Revolution

Shipping, central to the rise of Atlantic economies, was an extremely hazardous activity. Between 1780s and 1820s, a safety revolution occurred that saw shipping losses insurance rates on oceanic routes almost halved thanks steady improvements in shipbuilding navigation. Copper sheathing, iron reinforcing, flush decks were major innovations shipbuilding. Navigation improved, not through chronometers, which remained too expensive unreliable for general use, but radically improved charts, accessible manuals basic navigational techniques, shore-based aids. “Curse thee, thou quadrant!” dashing it deck, “no longer will I guide my earthly way by thee; level ship’s compass, dead-reckoning, log line; these shall conduct me, show me place sea.” Captain Ahab Moby Dick, Ch.
